Pokémon Trading Card Game: Beginner's Guide

Pokémon Trading Card Game: Beginner's Guide

1. Set Up:

  • Each player needs a deck of 60 cards.
  • Players decide who goes first with a coin flip.
  • Draw an initial hand of 7 cards.
  • From this hand, place a Basic Pokémon in the "Active Pokémon" spot. You can also place up to 5 Basic Pokémon on your "Bench."
  • If you cannot place a Basic Pokémon in play, shuffle your hand back into your deck and draw 7 cards again (this is called a Mulligan). Repeat until you can place a Basic Pokémon in play. Your opponent will draw a card every time you shuffle your hand back into your deck.

2. Objective:

Your goal is to "Knock Out" your opponent's Pokémon. When you do, you draw one of your Prize cards. Win by drawing all your Prize cards (usually 6) or if your opponent can't draw a card at the start of their turn. Alternatively, if you "Knock Out" your opponent's Pokémon, and they have none on their bench, the game will end and you win the game.

Note: different Pokémon offer different amounts of prize cards with some offering up to 3! Check the Pokémon card details before you claim your prize!

3. Playing a Turn:

a. Draw Card: Start your turn by drawing a card from your deck.

b. Bench Pokémon: You can place Basic Pokémon cards from your hand onto your Bench.

c. Attach Energy: Attach an Energy card (from your hand) to one of your Pokémon once per turn. Pokémon need Energy to use their attacks.

d. Evolve Pokémon: If you have a card in your hand that is the next stage of evolution for a Pokémon you have in play, you can place it on top of that Pokémon to evolve it. Pokémon can't evolve the turn they come into play.

e. Use Abilities and Attacks: Some Pokémon have abilities you can use now. Or, end your turn by using one of your Active Pokémon's attacks. Remember to check the energy requirements!

Check out Pidgeot's ability which allows you to search for any card in the deck, a really power ability!

4. Battle!

When your Active Pokémon attacks, you'll deal damage to the opponent's Active Pokémon. If its accumulated damage equals or exceeds its HP (hit points), it's Knocked Out!

5. Trading and Strategy:

As you play more, you'll learn about trading cards with friends and developing strategies. For now, focus on understanding the basics and having fun!

Note: The game has many other rules, types of cards, and strategic elements. This guide gives you the basics to start playing. As you get comfortable, explore deeper to master the game!
